Game Studio Research

Our task today is to research several Games and/ or VFX studios and answer the following questions about them:

  1. When were they founded?
  2. Who owns them? Partnering companies…
  3. What Movies and/or Games did they produce?
  4. What roles are available in the company? (More Artists, Animators, etc)
  5. Where would you fit into these companies? (What role would you apply for)
  6. What experience are they looking for? (Academic Degrees, Experience, etc)
  7. What can you offer them (when you finally graduate)?
  8. Who produced and made your favourite game/s?
  9. How do they market themselves?

  • 2K Games

2K Games are an American based video game company. They were founded January of 2005 and are a child company of Take-Two interactive. They’ve produced games such as Borderlands and BioShock as well as several sports titles. On their job page they list jobs such as Art/Animation, Game Designer,Writer and Motion Capture. I think within this company I would like to be within Art/Animation (I am not 100% sure what I want to do). On their jobs page they mention they are looking for people who can “get the job done” and are also fans of their games. My favourite game by them are the BioShock games because of how the environment feels. 2K market themselves well, their website looks professional and has several images of good graphics from their game.

  • Atlus Co., Ltd.

Atlus are a Japanese video games company which are based in Tokyo. They are the child company of Sega Games (very popular and well known for games like Sonic). They are much smaller than Sega though and only have 121 employees. They are known for games such as the Persona series and Megami Tensei. They are based in Tokyo so not all their content is available in England. My favourite game by them is Catherine as it does the platformer genre in a way it has not been done before.

  • Ubisoft

Ubisoft are a worldwide video game company originally from France. They were founded in March of 1986 and are famous for games like Assassins Creed, Far Cry, Rainbow Six and Prince of Persia. They are a large company with 10,000 employees and offer jobs for people who specialise in Programming, Art, Game Design, Level Design and Animation. I would like to specialise in something to do with art. Ubisoft also have a local studio in Newcastle called Ubisoft Reflections. My favourite game by Ubisoft is probably Far Cry 3 or Assassins Creed Brotherhood. They present themselves very professionally, their website is intractable and clearly designed.

  • 343 Industries

343 industries is a small studio which is a part of Microsoft studios and are famous for their help in the production of the Halo games after Bungie split from Microsoft and was founded in 2007. Microsoft Studios consists of 17 different studios worldwide (9 for game development and 8 for non-game development). Some of their notable game studios aside from 343 Industries are Mojang (Minecraft) and The Coalition (Gears of War). I couldn’t find anywhere to apply for 343 industries so I couldn’t find out their work specifications. 343 industries didn’t help make my favourite Halo but they helped make Halo Wars 2 which unlocks tomorrow and I have pre-ordered + looking forward to.

  • Bungie

Bungie is a video game company which originates from Chicago (although it is now based in Washington) and were founded in 1991. Their parent company was Microsoft Studios although they split with them in 2007 after being with them for 7 years. They’ve helped make games such as Halo and Destiny, Halo Reach being my favourite game produced by them. They have many jobs listed under Art and Design such as Character Artist, Concept Artist, Gameplay Designer and many more. In their jobs they look for experience with the programs they use within the company but list no required work experience. They present themselves professionally and their website includes a lot of information on job roles and abilities required for these jobs.

  • Studio Khara

Studio Khara are an animation studio based in Japan  formed in May of 2006 by Hideaki Anno (a Japanese animator and director) well known for directing the Neon Genesis Evangelion. I really like Hideaki Anno’s individual style and how he put his original stamp on the Neon Genesis Evangelion series. Hideaki Anno left GAINAX (the studio which developed the first Evangelion) and formed Studio Khara to work on the Evangelion Rebuild films. Key roles within the company are character designers and storyboard artists. My favourite product of this studio is probably the Evangelion 3.0 movie, the animation is lovely and how the piano scene is storyboarded and present is really nice. Studio Khara have also worked on several Studio Ghibli movies and had part in some TV anime like Gurren Lagann.

  • Spike Chunsoft

Spike Chunsoft is a Japanese company which was formed in 2012n when the two companies Spike (formed in 1991) and Chunsoft (formed in 1984) merged together. It is owned by Kadokawa Dwango and is known for its visual novels Danganronpa and Zero Escape. The company has also translated games such as Saints Row and Hotline Miami to Japanese for localised release in Japan. Their job roles primarily include design (as all their games have a unique art style which stays constant throughout) and storyboarding /  scriptwriting as since they produce visual novels whether the game succeeds or not relies greatly on whether the story is portrayed well or not. If I worked for this company I think I’d like to do character design because the main reason I liked their games so much is because the characters are so unique and likeable (including both their visual design and personality). My favourite game from them is Super Danganronpa 2 as it includes my favourite characters from the series.
